Launching the 2026 Road Safety Action Plan

The NSW Government has announced the 2026 Road Safety Action Plan.

Collaboration of road safety experts worldwide, the NSW community and key stakeholders helped develop this Plan that will help get closer to achieving zero deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads by 2050. The Plan features targeted and proven initiatives that build on existing programs, addressing key trauma risks and the types of crashes occurring on NSW roads. It includes:

  • building on the success of the Safer Roads Program, a new Towards Zero Safer Roads Program that supports the further rollout of safety treatments
  • a new online Learner Licence Education and Testing Platform to improve interactive learning and access to a licence
  • the further expansion of the Driver Licensing Access Program, which supports disadvantaged young people to become safely licensed
  • trialing a vehicle safety program to increase the use of safer vehicles among younger and disadvantaged drivers
  • using existing mobile phone detection cameras to detect and enforce drivers not wearing a seatbelt
  • trialing technology on heavy vehicles and buses to improve detection of pedestrians and cyclists
  • a partnership with the NSW Road Trauma Support Group, including funding to deliver services to families affected by road trauma
  • enhancing the Local Government Road Safety Program
  • delivering a new heavy vehicle safety strategy through partnership with industry
  • enhancing the Motorcycle Graduated Licensing Scheme to improve the safety of motorcyclists
  • a new online Road Safety Education Centre to improve access to information and resources for all road users and
  • revitalising the strategy for drug and alcohol testing of drivers.

Delivery of the Plan is boosted by $250 million in funding, bringing the NSW Government’s commitment to improving road safety to almost $2.4 billion over the next five years. NSW DTA stands behind all Toward Zero initiatives and encourages our Members and the public to follow their work and reports.
