Our major contribution to Structured Lesson Plans
Road Saftey starts with right experience
Practical driving education and training for young, learner-licensed drivers is under scrutiny by State authorities and organisations like Centre for Road Safety. Among many safety initiatives, they want to monitor and encourage the right behaviours for low-risk driving during the learning process.
This is a great opportunity for NSW DTA. In August a round-table online discussion between representatives from Centre for Road Safety (hosts), Transport NSW, RMS, Toward Zero, Youth Safe and NSW DTA (our president and admin) explored how to develop positive attitudes and skills in Learner drivers. The group identified issues to address about current practices and what resources are available. The goal of this meeting was to gain insight into how Centre for Road Safety might develop an improved set of online tools available for instructors and learners alike
We’re on it: Making life easier to kick goals
It’s a fact: Instructors must retain prepared lesson plans of all their students for audit purposes. That’s directly from Driving Instructors Regulation 2016 which updates the 2009 version to outline all requirements for professionally accredited driver training.
NSW Transport (RMS) has long provided the template for a Structured Lesson Plan. This is a standard form outlining key points for driver instruction and skill development.
What our Association has done over the last few months, thanks largely to President David Kennedy for sharing his experience and samples, is to develop Structured Lesson Plans (SLPs) for all 20 key driving skills outlined in the Learner Driver Log Book.

Tips & Tricks are included on each NSW DTA Structured Lesson Plan
On each form instructors can record a learner’s progress in each skill area with suggestions on resources to study or share. This makes these SLPs more valuable tools to help standardise and optimise good driving performance. These are ‘helping hand’ suggestions for each instructor to tailor to their own needs. For example, we indicate what pages to refer to in Log Book as well as using RTO materials that may be helpful for Instructors and Learners.
This is a unique NSW DTA Member benefit we are proud to offer as a tool and asset for each Member Instructor.
Beyond 3-for-1 compliance with requirements and audits
The 3-for-1 bonus hours scheme allows for students who enrol in each hour of structured driving lessons with a licensed Driving Instructor to record 3 hours driving experience in their Log Books. Most students elect to have expert supervision in specific skill to develop their confidence in areas like changing lanes, parking or complex traffic.
By using our Structured Lesson Plans (as printable downloads or interactive online forms), our Members have the benefit of confidence to respond to clients who ask any questions suggested by Transport for NSW about choosing a driving instructor.
Plans to share with Members in November
These SLP forms will be available on our Members page of our website to use as printable downloads or to upload in order to complete, store and share as digital files. They will be fully editable except for NSW DTA banner branding. Our Committee Members have reviewed and approved all content. We are open to hearing your suggestions to develop more resources for your betterment.
