Moving on from 2020 with major goals

What a year it’s been for NSW Driving Instructors and for our Association. Despite the challenges, we are proud of what we’re doing for Members to get attention from the public and governing bodies as we advocate smart learning practices for safer driving.

Where we’re headed for 2021

NSW DTA is a not-for-profit Association run by volunteers elected as the Executive Committee and supported by a part-time paid Admin. Our 2020 Committee has spent the year getting us back in the limelight with great communications channels like our website, Facebook page and regular email campaigns.

We are now in a much better position with our online presence to reach out to national and State Government offices to advocate initiatives to benefit Driving Schools and Trainers. We also want to raise the bar to encourage the best learning experience possible for drivers of any age.

What we’re working on

We have a lot planned for 2021. Our regular Committee meetings (this year via ZOOM) have recently prioritised areas we want to examine and effect change. Here’s the short list –but we seem to keep adding to it as issues are flagged.

  • Older Driver Medical Checks: The process is less than ideal, with many medical practitioners or Service NSW Centres not getting timely confirmations. We have begun logging Member experiences on this and will follow up.
  • Standard Lesson Plans: Our 20 topics of SLPs are now available online as downloads (Members page) and we are looking at making them interactive for Instructors to complete and personalise with their own data on any digital device.
  • Professional Development Workshops: As in years prior, we want to bring back special events to benefit Members in their practices both as driving instructors and small businesses. Topics are on the table as well as locations around NSW to hold these events.
  • Regular Service NSW Meetings: A proposal is going out in early 2021 to set aside regular monthly meeting times to hear first-hand priorities and policies by Service NSW. Our voice will make a difference in this and we plan to survey Members on various topics.
  • Task Force on Initiatives: We plan to be the ‘squeaky wheel’ on several topics that have been circulating for years. One of the first out the gate will be to continue to seek Learner Speed Limit Parity for NSW. We will invite Members to help represent us in this and will be looking for hands up from around the state.
  • Website updates: From our huge success promoting our site to attract Parents and Learners looking for Driving Instructors, we will continue to look at ways to make this unique feature work even harder to drive business to our Members.

Our secret weapon: Anthony Cope

Recently our Committee has been delighted to have help and input from former NSW DTA President Anthony Cope. We are pleased to say he has agreed to work with the Association in a Consultant capacity on special initiatives and projects. While he will not be serving on the Committee, we know he will be a valuable asset to achieve our goals.

Our proof is in the pudding

To recap the road we travelled during 2020, our Admin and her team put together a 2020 Year-In-Review presentation. This PowerPoint became a 5-minute animated video to showcase our hurdles and hoorahs. Take a few minutes to look it over and pass it on to any Driving Schools who haven’t yet signed up as DTA Members –because until 31 January, anyone who refers a NEW Member earns a DTA Polo Shirt!

Have your say

So many Members have told us how much they like what we’re doing and appreciate the business we’re bringing them.

With so much traction already, we’re keen to keep moving forward. With many initiatives planned, we need help to keep our rubber on the road. Please lend a hand if you could sign up for a Task Force or Sub-Committee. Drop a note to President David Kennedy at President@nswdta.com.au or to Karen at admin@nswdta.com.au

Our Admin support will be off with emails unattended from 22 December through 5 January.

For anything urgent send us a Facebook message. Best wishes!
