On the Road Towards Zero
Working together Towards Zero
We hosted the NSW Road Safety Forum 2024 in February. For the first time in the state’s history, experts from interstate and around the world came together to tackle the issues of deaths on our roads and improving road safety and saving lives.
Focusing on areas of increased fatalities in 2023, the Forum enabled a better understanding of road trauma trends. There was also an opportunity to consider accelerating initiatives within the 2026 Road Safety Action Plan and discuss new road safety priorities.
Watch each of the sessions here.
Hop to it and start planning your Easter road safety messaging!
Between 22 to 31 March, we will be encouraging people in NSW to drive safely over the Easter break with the Safety Never Takes a Holiday campaign.
Our egg-cellent tips include speeding, fatigue, drink driving and seatbelt safety.
Double Demerits will be in force 28 March to 1 April 2024 to help keep everyone safe. On Thursday 28 March, school zones are in operation. Additional penalties can apply for certain offences committed in school zones.
Please join us in promoting these important messages this Easter long weekend.

Level Crossing Safety
NSW Police Force are targeting illegal behaviour at level crossings in and around Junee, Old Junee and Marrar in March 2024.
This is part of an ongoing series of enforcement campaigns to help improve safety at level crossings in NSW.
Trains can travel at speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour and can take up to 14 football fields to stop. This means even if a train driver sees you, they may not be able to stop in time.

Getting on board for Bus Safety Week
Last month we held our annual Bus Safety Week from 19 to 25 February. This initiative focussed on educating all road users to stay safe on and around buses, including drivers, riders, passengers and pedestrians.
Thank you to everyone who got involved and shared these important messages.
Bus safety is always important so please email Towards Zero for resources to use all year round, or find out more about bus safety: Be Bus Aware | Transport for NSW.
No Children Left on Buses
With children heading back to school, pre-school and daycare, we are sharing this important reminder to all operators and bus drivers that the bus must be checked for children when completing end-of-shift procedures. Transport urges drivers to conduct a check anytime the driver is leaving the bus, including during lunch breaks.
In addition, when children have disembarked the vehicle at the service premises, a staff member or nominated supervisor (other than the driver) must examine the interior of the vehicle to confirm no children remain on board.
